There is nothing I love more than a good costume.
When I was a kindergarten teacher, I made any excuse I could to break out a creative fit.
Red week? Red Rocker crayon.
100th day? 100 year old.
Last game of the World Series? A baseball autographed by Jose Altuve.
See below for evidence.
So it should come as no surprise that the Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend was basically my Oscars.
But I don’t just love costumes— I love costumes that nobody else has done (blame the Enneagram 4 in me). For the Disney Princess Half Marathon, that required a whole lot of brainstorming..
If you’re not familiar with the Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend, it’s one of four Disney World Race Weekends held annually. In February every year, Walt Disney World invites runners from all over the world to pay them hundreds of dollars to run through their parks. We, as crazy runners, do so without question… because it’s Disney World.
So when my friends and I committed to running, I had one goal: make it onto the RunDisney Instagram. The way to do that? A show-stopping, completely original costume.
But let’s be real—how do you stand out when every single Disney Princess has already been done (and done well)?
I knew we needed something clever. Something unexpected. And after months of brainstorming, inspiration struck mid-run:
Princess Crayons.
Hear me out.
In the South, some people call crayons “crowns.” What do princesses wear? Crowns. Put it together and what have you got? Princess Crayons that wear crowns!
Cinderella: Bippity Boppity Blue
Belle: Bello Yellow
Ariel: Under the Sea Green
Rapunzel: Lost Princess Purple
Jasmine: Jasmint
✨ Cue angels singing ✨
Now that we had the very best idea ever (if I do say so myself) it was time to bring the costumes to life!
The Costume Breakdown
The Dresses:
This Amazon dress in Cinderella Blue—comfy, affordable, and perfect for race day. (I even bought a second one for the half the next day; more on that later)
The Details:
To transform our dresses into Crayolas, we added:
Crayola waves & princess logos – Hand-painted using a stencil and fabric paint
"Crown” text – Made with a Cricut & heat transfer vinyl
The Crayon Crown:
Naturally, we needed crayon hats. These were tricky to get the shape right, but in the end they looked great! We used:
a floral foam cone (you can use these ones from Amazon, or find them at your local craft store)
craft felt
a thick plastic headband
and a crown of course
Accessories
Since I was Bippity Boppity Blue, I needed Cinderella accessories. But also accessories that I could run in.
Simple Black Choker (Amazon)
Slouchy White Socks (Amazon)
These had nothing to do with Cinderella, I just really liked them. And still wear them any time I can.
White Cooling Sleeves (Amazon)
These were my ode to Cindy’s white gloves.
Body Glitter (Amazon)
Because of course. Side note: this body glitter is amazing. Once it goes on, you barely feel it, and it lasts a long time. Even through sweat. 10/10 recommend
Cinderella Friendship Bracelet (handmade)
Made on the drive to Disney.
The Big Moment
On race morning, we hit the starting line in full Princess Crown glory. In order to fully commit to the bit, we even sang the “Out of the Box” theme song in the corrals.
And guess what? People LOVED it. We got tons of compliments (from RunDisney employees, I might add!!!), high-fives, and—yes—we the RunDisney Instagram asked to take our picture.
They did not post it, but c’est la vie.
So if you’re looking for a unique RunDisney costume, don’t be afraid to think outside the box.
All in all, it was one of my sharpest costume moments, and I’m glad I had a great pack that was willing to color outside of the lines.
Okay, I’m done.
Keep on crayon on, y’all.
(okay, that was the last one)
